Highway to Hell
Baern was trained since birth to be a hunter of mortals. Raised by a cult of Asmodeus, he is forever watchful of those deserving of judgement. He has lived over a century in service to the Lord of the Nine Hells, often called to end the lives of heroes who would seek to undo the plans of Asmodeus, but sometimes called upon to destroy those who bore the gifts of his lord and squandered them.
Over his life he has come to respect many of the gods, as one comes to respect an enemy or rival. Over the decades, he has come to regard the Raven Queen highest of all, given a lifetime of dealing death.
The one group which draws malice from Baern on every occasion he meets them are those Duegar who have made pacts with the other archdevils, especially when it is in service against Asmodeus. Part of it is something bordering on disgust, for those, so much like himself, who have pledged themselves to any archdevil beneath the Lord of the Ninth. Another part of it is some deep seated need to prove himself as better than the rest, and to show all that his Lord is truly the greatest of the nine.
He feels forever drawn forward, as if pulled by fate or some divine purpose. His instructions do not always come in the form of some prophet or direct message from Asmodeus, sometimes it’s just a feeling. He always finds his targets, no matter how well they hide or guard themselves and when his hammer falls upon them, he feels that tug loosen and praise from some unseen entity follow. It’s never long after before the tug begins again, drawing him to seek out another in need of judgement.
